The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society was affiliated with the United Nations as an NGO (Non-Governmental-Organization) for 10 years between 1992 and 2001:
The UN itself admitted yesterday that it was surprised that the sect, whose formal name is the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York, had been accepted on its list of non-governmental organisations for the last 10 years. (The Guardian, 10/8/2001).
The Jehovah’s Witnesses have hurriedly disaffiliated from the United Nations within days of a Guardian story in which members accused the sect of hypocrisy for supporting an organisation it has repeatedly denounced privately.
After the article last Monday, the organisation’s New York based hierarchy pre-empted a UN inquiry by agreeing to dissociate the Witnesses from an organisation which it holds to be the scarlet beast named in the Book of Revelation.
The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York, as the sect is formally known, has 6m members worldwide and 130,000 in Britain. It had been secretly affiliated to the UN as a non-governmental organisation for 10 years. ( The Guardian 10/14/2001).
The United Nations even issued a form letter verifying the Watchtower’s affiliation with them.
For years, the Watchtower has vilified the United Nations calling them the “Scarlet Dragon”, a messenger of Satan.
This scarlet-colored wild beast could not be any single one of these seven world powers, for we are plainly told that it “springs from the seven,” also that it is an eighth. It would therefore have to include all of them in some form or another. What could this beast represent but that entity first known as the League of Nations and now as the United Nations? (WT12/1/1962, p. 732)
For example, C. T. Russell could not have correctly understood the meaning of the symbolic scarlet-colored wild beast mentioned at Revelation 17:9-11, since the organizations that the beast represents, namely, the League of Nations and the United Nations, did not even exist until after his death. (WT 3/15/2000, p. 13)
THE Bible book of Revelation describes a vision of “a scarlet-colored wild beast that was full of blasphemous names.” It exists for a while, then goes into an abyss from which it later arises. (Revelation 17:3, 8) Frequently, the pages of this magazine have identified this scarlet-colored beast with, initially, the League of Nations and, subsequently, its successor, the United Nations. (WT 9/1/1989, p. 7)
But who will destroy the harlotlike organization? Jehovah God will put “his thought” into the hearts of “the ten horns” of the “scarlet-colored wild beast.” These horns represent all the present political powers that give support to the United Nations, an organization pictured by the “scarlet-colored wild beast.”—Read Revelation 17:3, 16-18. (WT 7/15/2015, p. 15)
So, even though the Watchtower identified the United Nations with Satan calling it the “scarlet-colored wild beast” they felt no qualms in affiliating themselves with the United Nations if it suited their purposes.
