Matt. 20:28 “Ransom”

Jehovah’s Witnesses will often say Jesus gave His body as a ransom, and you can’t take back a ransom.  Therefore, Jesus could not have been raised in the body that died on Calvary.  They will quote a few verses for this:

There are just three verses in the New Testament that speak of what exactly Jesus paid as this ransom:

1 Timothy 2:6 (NWT)  who gave himself a corresponding ransom for all—this is what is to be witnessed to in its own due time.

Mark 10:45 (NWT)  For even the Son of man came, not to be ministered to, but to minister and to give his life as a ransom in exchange for many.”

Matthew 20:28 (NWT)  Just as the Son of man came, not to be ministered to, but to minister and to give his life as a ransom in exchange for many.”

So, in one verse, we’re told Jesus gave Himself and in the other two, His life.  We are never told Jesus gave His body for the church.  In fact, we are told He gave His blood

Acts 20:28 (NWT) Pay attention to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the holy spirit has appointed you overseers, to shepherd the congregation of God, which he purchased with the blood of his own Son.

Look at the Watchtower’s translation of Eph. 1:7 (NWT)  By means of him we have the release by ransom through the blood of that one, yes, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his undeserved kindness.

So, Jesus gave His blood, not His body for our ransom.  He did not take His blood back, so there shouldn’t be a problem with returned ransoms.

Just as an added point, the JWs will quote 1 Cor. 15:50 saying Jesus could not have been raised bodily because flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom:

1 Cor. 15:50 (NWT)  But I tell you this, brothers, that flesh and blood cannot inherit God’s Kingdom, nor does corruption inherit incorruption.

Since Jesus had no blood (Luke 24:39), the verse does not apply.
