I’m Mike. I was raised in a fairly areligious home. My mother was Catholic, but we seldom went to church. When I was in my early teens, I asked a priest where Cain’s wife came from. His response was, “We don’t ask those questions.” This told me that Christianity was a blind and baseless faith and I became agnostic.
Years later, I met the girl who would become my wife. Hers was a deeply Christian family, so I started going to church with them. I thought at this time that Christianity was just a sort of club, a place where people went for self-improvement. Since I wanted to be a better person, I went too. I wanted to impress her as well, of course.
Five years later, I had been baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church and was convinced I was a Christian since I had, “Joined the club.” A Jehovah’s Witness, Jerry, was hired at work and we would joust during the week on doctrine: Christian vs JWs. I went to my in-laws for help in talking with Jerry, and they eventually gave me a copy of Walter Martin’s Kingdom of the Cults. In there, I found that salvation meant to give one’s life over to Jesus and give Him full control. I thought, “Great! I’ll share that with Jerry.” But God said, “You need to read that again. You haven’t done that.”
I had had someone in control of my life when I was young, and it didn’t turn out well. I wasn’t about to turn over control of my life to God without a struggle. For the next six months, I fought with God until He finally gave me a clear view of what was awaiting me if I rejected Christ. A CLEAR view. So, I turned my life over to Christ through God using a cultist, Jerry. Since then, I’ve tried to return the favor by sharing with Jehovah’s Witnesses every chance I get.
