1 Corinthians 15:45

The Watchtower teaches Jesus was not raised in the body which died on Calvary but as a spirit being.  One of the passages they like to use to try to support this doctrine is 1 Corinthians 15:45.  Here is the verse in the Watchtower’s own New World Translation (NWT):

So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living person.”  The last Adam became a life-giving spirit. (NWT, 2013)

What the Watchtower wishes to teach from this passage is that Jesus became a spirit.  But, Jesus was always a Spirit because God is Spirit (John 4:24).  In Philippians 2:5-8, we’re told Jesus was in the form of God (in other words, being God, He was spirit) and took on the form of man (He added a human nature, flesh and blood, to His Godhood).  So, Jesus was and is both God and man, both Spirit and flesh.

A second point must be made here, and that is there is only one “became” in the verse in the original Greek.  The second “became” simply isn’t there.  So, the verse doesn’t teach that Jesus became a spirit.  Jesus was already a spirit along with being a flesh and bone man.  Jesus wasn’t a life-giver after His resurrection, as God he has always been the life giver (John 14:6).
